Artist Notes:
Floral Stripes by Alicia Sterling Beach
Alicia Sterling Beach has always used art as a way to find meaning and beauty in her world. An accident she experienced as a young child left her with mobility issues, and she has spent the majority of her adult life coping with chronic pain from degenerative chronic osteoporosis and PTSD. She has also experienced housing insecurity as a result of her condition. Through her artwork, Alicia hopes to be an advocate for people who are unhoused and have disabilities, some of which may be hidden to an outside observer.
“As the culture of art is always changing, it keeps me on my toes. As the audience for it changes, I change. Also, the more endowed I am with life experience, the more I like to challenge myself to selflessly serve the highest good, often through my art.”
Becoming by Juliana Alonso
Juliana Alonso is an intuitive artist whose physical and digital works aim to spark connection to our inner sense of hope and joy, especially in those experiencing uncertainty and adverse health conditions. Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, Juliana likes to say she is composed mostly of sentiment, compassion, and imagination. Her loss of motor ability deeply influences her artwork. She feels connected to watercolor, in particular, through the unpredictable ways it flows, similar to her movements.
“Within what is physically possible for me, my current work feels like a timestamp that reflects my ever-healing path combined with childhood memories of a horizon drawn in the high altitudes of my Andes mountains. My process honors my worthiness beyond my ability and connects me to my homeland and family. It is an exploration of curiosity and play through uncertainty, expressed by way of abstract markmaking mixed with a childlike practice filled with freedom.”
Purple Aster by Kendra Rowan
Kendra dedicated her life to creative expression and volunteering her time to others in their time of need. She was a proud ArtLifting artist for one year until she passed in 2018. It was important for Kendra that her art continue to have an impact on the world.
Kendra lived with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, which influenced her artistic style. She spent a lot of time being still, allowing her to observe the details of the world around her. As a lifelong scholar of biology and ecology, Kendra also drew artistic inspiration from nature. She found peace in spending time outdoors and hoped to share this passion with others through her nature-themed art.
“Art’s power comes not from the act of creating, but from the gift of sharing one’s creations.”
